Leatherman Multi Tool

They say necessity is the mother of invention. It certainly is true regarding the invention of Leatherman multi tools.

As the story goes, back in 1975, the inventor of the Leatherman tool, Tim Leatherman, was traveling across Europe in a beat-up old car that needed constant maintenance. Tim quickly realized he needed some kind of 'survival tool' if he was going to keep that car moving down the road! And an idea and and invention was born.

Leatherman multitools have come a long way since then and it's very evident in their latest – and greatest – pocket tool the Leatherman 830039 New Wave Multitool with Leather/Nylon Combination Sheath.

Catch The WAVE!

The Leatherman Wave multi-tool is by far their most popular model. The Wave is 17 tools in one with a 2 bit count. Imagine what all MacGyver could have done with this puppy!

Features and Improvement of the New Leatherman Wave

Many Leatherman owners are very happy with their multitool but the company is an industry leader for a reason: they're not one to rest on their laurels.

Listening to their customers, Leatherman incorporated some new improvements to the full-sized New Wave. The 830039 is made with:

  • Larger knives

  • Stronger pliers

  • Longer wire cutters

  • All-locking blades

Leatherman redesigned the pliers on the 830039 to withstand more than double the previous squeezing load. You can really get a firm grip on the intended object now and not worry about warping or slipping off.

Leatherman also included a new bronze bushing. This adds to the tool's versatility making one-handed knife access a smooth operation. (It's not a switchblade! But you can open the knife blade with just one hand – if you're right-handed that is.)

Functionality was further increased with one-at-a-time blade selection. No more fumbling around trying to access the exact tool you want. Select the right tool when you need it.

To complete the rugged ensemble, the go-anywhere-tackle anything Wave comes with a durable and attractive leather/nylon combination sheath. Or just slip it in your pocket! The convenient size makes it easy to take your Wave multi-tool wherever you're going.

Leatherman's 25-Year Guarantee: Really!

You can buy cheaper multi-tools but the level of quality just isn't there. That's something you'll find out very quickly with the first use of a knock-off. I've used a 'cheapie' tool a time or two and swore I'd never buy another piece of junk again. When you need a tool to work – well, you need it to work!

Check out this video featuring a guy who bought two broken down Leatherman tools from somebody online. His original intent was to have enough parts to make one good tool.

Then he had an idea and checked out Leatherman's website: http://www.leatherman.com. They claimed they'd fix or replace any Leatherman tool – and to this fella's astonishment, the company did just that except they sent him two brand new Waves!

He's a firm believer in Leatherman's no-hassle warranty program and that they stand firmly behind their product.

Tool Time

There's plenty to like – and admire – about the Leatherman's mulit tools. They are designed with real world, hard use in mind.

Many loyal Leatherman owners proudly boast that the differences between a Leatherman and cheap imitators are huge. The Wave's steel quality is measurably better, and tolerances are smaller.

One guy said: "The pliers really grip and the wire cutters really cut". Imagine that!

Another one mentioned: "the wave resists torque/twisting that many other multi-tools can't handle."

My research discovered a common theme from many Leatherman multi tool owners: "once you get a Leatherman, you can't ever go back to the knockoffs!"

Blade Runner

The Wave has four blades that can be accessed while the tool is closed. In fact, the external knife blade can only be opened when the tool is closed.

The straight-edge and serrated knives are razor sharp and can be opened with one hand. This is great if your holding on to the object that needs cut and only have one free hand. Simply hold the folded tool in your palm and unfold the knife with the thumb-latch sticking out.

Many found this one-hand operation easier than with Swiss Army knives when it comes to quick drawing. They are also happy to report that the keen edge was kept even after handling the toughest of jobs.

If you should need to hone the edge a bit, the owner's manual states that the straight knife may be sharpened using standard sharpening methods.

Leatherman suggests when sharpening the serrated knife blade, be sure to use a sharpening system designed to accommodate serrations. This will ensure that proper curvature of the serrations and the cutting effectiveness of the blade are maintained.

Many, Many Happy Owners

It's not hard to find glowing comments from Wave owners and the pride they have in their Leatherman multi tool.

I read accounts from firemen, policemen, paramedics, hunters, fishermen, boaters, maintenance workers, mailmen, well, you get the idea: lots of folks!

They ALL give high marks and praise for this handy – and in some cases – lifesaving tool.

Here are a sampling of the comments I came across:

  • There has not been a day that I have not used my Wave for one thing or another. It is a tool box on a belt.

  • THANKS Leatherman for helping me and fellow workers at our JOB!

  • I've had numerous multitools. None of them compared to the Leatherman Wave.

  • I use it for everything from replacing batteries in children's toys, to slicing apples during a pick-nick.

  • I love the one-handed opening knife blades.

  • I used to carry a few tools in my tech bag, all of them have been replaced by this one awesome tool.

  • The tools are so handy, and the quality far exceeds any Gerber multi-tool ever made, period!
